The rates for transfers between the city of Medellín and José María Córdova Airport, through applications such as Uber, special transport vehicles or cabs, are well above the values normally paid for a common service within the city.
While a trip by Uber, cab or similar, from a hotel to a restaurant located 30 minutes away, can cost on average COP 20,000 (US 5, approximately), the transfer from the city to the airport takes almost the same time and costs 5.5 times more (about COP 110,000).
Thus, the transfer costs to and from the airport in Medellin may seem excessive, however, several factors justify them.
Why do transfers to and from the airport in Medellin cost more than a conventional service?
The distance between the airport and the city and the presence of tolls on the roads are the reasons why transfers between Medellín and its international airport are higher than the usual transportation services within the metropolitan area. As mentioned above, the trip by car between the city and the airport takes at least 30 minutes.
What are the transportation rates between Medellin and the airport?
Currently, the regulated cab fare between Medellín and the international airport is COP 110,000. Uber fares can range from COP 80,000 to COP 110,000, according to the time and demand for this service, i.e., what is called the “Uber dynamic fare”.
If a cab is paid, the cost of the toll is covered within the fare, therefore, the passenger does not have to pay extra money to pass the toll booth. In the case of Uber, this application recognizes the cost of the toll to the driver, after the service ends (read the article in which Uber explains toll payments to drivers). However, since when the user requests the service in Uber, the toll payment is not made clear in the summary of the request, it is likely that some drivers (by mistake) ask the customer to pay the toll separately.
The cost of the toll on the route that connects the city center with the airport is COP 23,900.
